I seem to have this thing with thin thread. The thinner the better. If the pattern is complicated too, it's as good as it gets ;-)
So far I have mostly knitted with cotton and wool. I much prefer knitting with wool. It seems to be much easier on the hands, especially if I combine it with wooden or bamboo needles. Unfortunately, doilies are more useful in cotton, so that is what I have done most of my knitting in.
I bought this very fine wool thread for weaving from Karen Noe Design. It is Nm 36/2, which means it is two ply and has a running length of appr. 18.000 m/kg (ie. thin ;-) I thought about knitting a shawl to see how it works out, but caution got the better of me, so I started with this doily. I used size 1.5 mm knitting needles and it measures appr. 18 cm across. The pattern is "Jan" from the Danish book Kunststrik II by Sonja Esbensen.
This was was my first attempt at knitted lace. I was pregnant with my daughter, Amanda, and I was itching to make an heirloom piece. I got the pattern and a lot of help from Maeve DeHetre - thanks, Maeve. I knitted the last stitch some six hours before the water broke and I was rushed to the hospital. Talk about timing ! It is knitted in Italian merino wool on size 2.5 mm needles and measures appr. 1.20 m.
I inherited this from my great-grandmother. I don't think she knitted it herself. I hope to one day chart the pattern and make a copy of it. There is some discolouration that I hope will wash out in a gentle soak. The coin is a danish 2 DKK coin, which is appr. 2.5 cm (1 inch) across.
I recently acquired appr. one kilogram fine cotton
thread from B.C.Garn.
This is what that much thread looks like when wound on a cone ! The
coin is to give you an idea of the size of the cone. The coin is
appr 2.5 cm (1 inch) across. The thread is Nm 27/2, which means it
is two ply and has a running length of 13.500 m/kg. This is appr.
the same size as DMC 30, but not as shiny since it is not
mercerized. I plan to knit doilies etc. from this cone for years to come ! |
